“This is the way we used to walk to school,” Elisa recalled, looking up at the new street sign installed underneath Prospect Avenue.
The Seeger family gathered with close friends and elected officials Saturday morning to watch the unveiling of “Aidan Seeger Way” in a small street co-naming ceremony in the Windsor Terrace section of Brooklyn. Councilwoman Shahana Hanif thanked Elisa and Bobby Seeger for their years of advocacy.
“It has been powerful for us to be able to use our tools in the city council to bring Aidan to life in Brooklyn through this street co-naming,” said the Councilmember, recalling the passing of Aidan’s Law in New York and efforts to implement ALD screening across the United States.
“The work that the two of you have done is going to touch so many lives and many of them won’t even know it. We’ll know what you and your family have done and his memory will be a blessing for all of us,” said Assemblymember Robert Carroll.
Father Francis of Breezy Point offered a blessing and prayer at the intersection just before the unveiling of the new sign. He reminded everyone in attendance that Aidan is an angel and is loved by all.

Aidan’s Law was passed in New York in 2013, eleven months after his passing, and screening for ALD began on December 30th of that year. Since that time, Aidan’s family has been advocating for ALD newborn screening across the United States. As of today, 28 other states are screening for ALD and more than 260 babies have been identified at birth to have ALD. These children will now have access to monitoring and life-saving treatment if needed. Through the foundation started in his honor, Aidan’s mom continues to press forward until every state is screening babies for ALD and other federally recommended conditions.
